Unexpected Relations Which Characterize Operator Means

We give some characterizations of self-adjointness and symmetricity of operator monotone functions by using the Barbour transform f → t+f 1+f and show that there are many non-symmetric operator means between the harmonic mean ! and the arithmetic mean ∇. Indeed, we show that there exists a non-symmetric operator mean between any two symmetric operator means.

Scientific Decisions which Characterize VDM

The formal description and development method known as VDM has been used extensively, its specification language is now an ISO standard, and it has influenced other specification languages. The origins of VDM are normally placed in language description or semantics but it is probably best known in the wider arena of formal methods for (general) program specification and design. This paper sets ...

Using Verbs to Characterize Noun-Noun Relations

We present a novel, simple, unsupervised method for characterizing the semantic relations that hold between nouns in noun-noun compounds. The main idea is to discover predicates that make explicit the hidden relations between the nouns. This is accomplished by writing Web search engine queries that restate the noun compound as a relative clause containing a wildcard character to be filled in wi...

Means on Equivalence Relations

Suppose that X is a Polish space and E is a countable Borel equivalence relation on X. We show that if there is a Borel assignment of means to the equivalence classes of E, then E is smooth. We also show that if there is a Baire measurable assignment of means to the equivalence classes of E, then E is generically smooth.

Unexpected Relations of Historical Anthrax Strain

In 1998, it was claimed that an 80-year-old glass tube intentionally filled with Bacillus anthracis and embedded in a sugar lump as a WWI biological weapon still contained viable spores. Today, genome sequencing of three colonies isolated in 1998 and subjected to phylogenetic analysis surprisingly identified a well-known B. anthracis reference strain isolated in the United States in 1981, point...
